time for {another} makeover

photo via Pinterest
When Tay and I got married, people were more than happy to donate their old/used furniture to a poor, young, and married couple. Even my parents contributed to our collection. And we were glad to accept their donations! I honestly don't know what we would have filled our house with if they hadn't been so generous. One of the pieces we received was this book shelf:

yikes that's blurry

It's heavy and great for storing our books, records, and photo albums, but it desperately needs a make-over. I've been looking for inspiration and I recently saw this picture on Little Green Notebook:

I love the thought of using patterned contact paper for the backing. It adds such a nice pop of color! There were similar ideas on Design*Sponge too:

Check out the whole post here.
Can you believe this hutch was only $75?
Both tutorials were pretty helpful, but I really have no idea what colors to go with. We live in a rented house (no luck painting the walls) with mostly mis-matched furniture so I just want to choose a color palette that will go with almost everything. Any suggestions?

  1. I LOVE that first picture and the fireplace!
I don't know what to tell you!, I would do the backing! Maybe strip it down and stain it a lighter color as well?

  4. I love that idea, Amelia! Maybe Europe instead of the U.S. :)

  5. I feel like painting it a nice taupe color will pretty much go with whatever - you can use a navy or something for the backing, which could easily be switched in the future with new contact paper or a coat of paint!
