puppy love

I briefly mentioned last week that Taylor and I are getting a puppy! And not just any puppy, a German Shepherd. This has all transpired rather quickly, but I'll give you some back story.

It was right before Christmas when Taylor told me he wanted to get me a dog. We went to the pound and picked out a pup- only to find out the day before getting him that our house was not pet friendly. It was sad but we chose to see it as a sign that the timing just wasn't right.

Flash forward to a few weeks ago and I find out Taylor has been in contact with a breeder in Winder. They have a great reputation and a litter due in March so Taylor puts down a deposit. Did I mention we weren't completely sure if we could find someone to take over our current lease in the no-pets-allowed house?

Within two weeks everything came together perfectly (i.e. we signed a new lease and found someone to take over our lease by May). The litter was due yesterday and we found out late last night that our pup was the first born boy! I can't wait to meet our little Chief (named after a dog Taylor knew growing up) and teach him lots of tricks.

Do you have a dog? If so, what would you suggest in regards to training?

  2. For my dog, we had a personal trainer come to the house. She came twice, and in two separate sessions she taught the dog to sit, stay, lay down, turn around, high five, wave, to sit and wait for her food, to speak, and how to walk on a leash. She also gave us tips on getting the puppy to go to the bathroom OUTSIDE haha so I highly suggest having a personal trainer stop by once or twice. it is WORTH the money. My dog is 12 and still knows everything she learned!

  3. That is so awesome that everything worked out and you are able to get a puppy! It will be such a fun experience. With a breed like a German Shepherd you will want to start training as young as possible and I'd suggest a pro trainer while your little guy is still young. It is so much easier to form good habits then to break bad ones later!

  4. Thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely be doing some research in regards to trainers. Everything I've read is the earlier the better. Especially with a breed like German Shepherds (where people can be afraid of large dogs) I want him to be as well-behaved as possible. I'll keep you updated on how it goes!
